"Soil And Its Promise As A Climate Solution: A Primer"

"Soil acts as a carbon sink in the global carbon cycle because it locks away decomposed organic matter. But deforestation, various agricultural practices, and a changing climate are releasing it back into the atmosphere and oceans as carbon dioxide, resulting in an imbalance in global carbon budgets."

Mark Schapiro — 2021 Candidate for Active Seat

I've been an environmental journalist for more than three decades. I began at the Center for Investigative Reporting, straight out of college, where I learned as a cub reporter from masters of the trade to think of stories as threads of evidence. I quickly learned that investigating those threads on environmental stories ultimately leads to questions of equity and power — who is most frequently exposed to environmental hazards, and who is protected from them.

Luke Runyon — 2021 Candidate for Active Seat

I’m running to serve a full term on the board of the Society of Environmental Journalists, to continue serving an organization I believe in deeply.

I was appointed to the board in June 2021 to serve the remainder of a term. In my short time on the board I've learned about the scope and breadth of SEJ's work, and the duties of board members. I serve on the fundraising and governance committees, and am grateful I can bring my experience in nonprofit journalism to SEJ. I would be honored to earn your support to continue that work.

Rico Moore — 2021 Candidate for Active Seat

I’m Rico Moore and I was appointed to the SEJ board of directors in May. I’m excited to run for election in hopes I’ll be able to continue the work I’ve begun since joining the organization as a member. My time on the board has inspired me to run, as I believe we are working together to improve SEJ for all. My purpose for running is to improve Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) in SEJ and the field of environmental journalism, as well as strengthen press freedoms.
