Meet SEJ member Ev Crunden! Ev is a chemicals and waste reporter at POLITICO's E&E News, where they focus on a range of topics, from EPA's chemicals office to the Superfund program and issues concerning waste and recycling, including plastics. They are originally from Texas, but have been based in Washington, D.C. for nearly a decade, where they moved after earning a bachelor's degree from Smith College. Ev also holds a master's degree from Johns Hopkins University. At E&E, they juggle a mix of daily pieces pegged to the news cycle alongside bigger features and investigations. One of the most all-consuming stories on their beat involves all things PFAS. Some of the pieces Ev is most proud of include a FOIA-powered look at EPA turmoil over a PFAS health assessment and an investigation into an agency-linked consultant who has downplayed PFAS concerns, which Ev reported with fellow SEJ member Ariel Wittenberg. Previously, as a reporter covering the waste and recycling industry at Waste Dive, Ev focused heavily on how PFAS were impacting the industry, resulting in a three-part series looking closely at PFAS disposal. That fixation led them into the wider world of toxics reporting, ranging from industry influence and the role of government to environmental justice realities and how impacted communities are fighting back. Ev will be focusing on many of those stories in the coming year, with an emphasis on scrutinizing the role of the EPA, which faces increasing pressure to take action on many toxics and waste issues. Ev is also a member of NLGJA, TJA and IRE.

When asked if they recommend SEJ membership to their colleagues, Ev said, "Absolutely. Joining SEJ helped me when I was new to the beat and overwhelmed. Attending an SEJ conference and meeting up with other reporters truly helped me become more at ease. I'd strongly recommend joining to new journalists, but also for seasoned veterans to keep meeting interesting people and stay apprised of the wider issues and trends within our industry."
