I’ve cared deeply for the environment for as long as I can remember. My earliest photos show a curious kid knee-deep in water searching for tadpoles or admiring wildflowers on a muddy mountainside. Now that same kid (at heart) turned a passion for the outdoors and a curiosity about everything into a career.
I joined NPR’s 1A show in 2017 in a pivot away from corporate newspapers and now I’m the team’s special projects editor. We don’t have beats on 1A, which has helped me worm environmental and climate coverage into a wide array of topics.
I'm running for a position on SEJ’s board because I've devoted my entire career to climate journalism, and I sincerely believe we aren't going to solve this crisis without inspiring our audiences to meaningfully participate in climate solutions. The fate of the planet depends on us getting this right. Dramatic, I know. But this is dramatic stuff!
I am writing to express my strong desire to run for the esteemed position of board member in the Society of Environmental Journalists. As an award-winning environmental journalist with an unwavering commitment to environmental issues, I am excited to contribute my expertise and passion to further the organization's vital mission.
As a photojournalist based in both Boston, Mass., and rural Prince Edward Island, Canada, I am running for a seat on the SEJ board to increase and maintain membership diversity by continuing outreach efforts and programming that is inclusive and fosters a sense of belonging among all members.
I’m running to serve on the Society of Environmental Journalists board because I want to help support programming that expands opportunities for environmental reporting and addresses the many challenges that prevent reporters — especially in smaller and under-resourced newsrooms — from covering issues vital to their communities, topics ranging from extreme heat to water quality.
Dear SEJ members,
My first SEJ conference admittedly caught me off guard. While I was expecting a gathering of like-minded professional colleagues, I wasn’t anticipating a community of friends and allies.
The support and mentorship that SEJ provides to its members is what makes the organization so valuable (and has undoubtedly helped us all at some point). Bolstering those avenues for connection is what excites me most about joining the SEJ board.
Thank you for considering my candidacy for a spot on the SEJ Board for 2023-26. It is an honor to be a candidate for one of the most prestigious board seats in the country. I toss my hat in the ring as a veteran journalist and 7-year member of SEJ.

I've never dreamed of joining a board, but I have, like many reporters, believed strongly in the possibility of change. I began freelancing while pursuing a degree in mass communications in college. From the start, social justice and human rights issues have fueled my passion for journalism. I look to elevate voices from historically and intentionally marginalized communities. It only took my first full-time journalism job to quickly recognize how human rights are inextricably linked to the environment.
