Hot Times for Summer of 2007

September 26, 2007

The summer of 2007 was another hot one in the US and worldwide. NOAA says August was the second warmest on record in the US, and the third warmest worldwide. The June-August period was the sixth warmest on record in the US and the seventh warmest worldwide (NOAA News).

More than 2,000 daily high temperature records were set in the southern and central US alone, and 10 states had either their warmest summer (June-August) or August. The higher temperatures forced national residential energy use up by an estimated 8% over the seasonal average.

Accompanying the higher temperatures was drought, which continues to blanket about half the country. At the other extreme, Texas had its wettest summer on record, and Oklahoma its fourth wettest. Iowa had its wettest August.
