SEJournal News: New EJ InSight, Freelance Files Co-Editors Named

The SEJournal has named photojournalists Andrew Cullen and Jonathan Hale as the new co-editors for its EJ InSight column, and freelance writer Elyse Hauser as a new Freelance Files co-editor.

The three new column co-editors join five other new co-editors who joined the publication’s masthead earlier this year.

Cullen and Hale will help revive the EJ InSight column, which was launched in 2018 to explore the cutting edge of visual journalism on the environment. The column has spotlighted exemplary work from leading freelance and staff practitioners in photojournalism, videography and data infographics, including at National Geographic, The New York Times and The Boston Globe.

Cullen (pictured, right) is an independent photojournalist and a 2022-2023 Ted Scripps Fellow for Environmental Journalism at CU Boulder whose work examines the complicated relationships between the environment and individual and communal identities. He’s currently based in Los Angeles and works on projects around the Western U.S. He has photographed for The New York Times, NPR, CNN, Reuters and many others.

Cullen’s interest in the environment developed as a Peace Corps volunteer and then as a freelance journalist in Mongolia. He later lived in North Dakota, covering the state’s oil fields and protests against the Dakota Access Pipeline. Cullen has served as a newspaper reporter in Maine and as a photo editor at High Country News.

Hale (pictured, left) is a freelance photographer, writer and editor based out of Oakland, California. He covers local events and city politics for the Richmond Pulse and previously served as head photo editor of The Daily Californian, UC Berkeley's paper of record. He has written about the history of physics and the philosophy of science in the Berkeley Scientific Journal and covered his home state of California for the Berkeley Political Review, writing about California's drought and the United Farm Workers.

 

Hauser (pictured, right), who joins fellow Freelance Files co-editor Christine Woodside, is an emerging environmental journalist and essayist based in the Pacific Northwest. She focuses on marine and aquatic ecosystems, especially the deep sea and protecting the unknown.

Hauser began writing professionally shortly after graduating in 2011 and received her MFA in creative nonfiction in 2023 from the University of New Orleans, where she won the 2023 Carol Gelderman Nonfiction Thesis Award. In New Orleans, she also rediscovered her passion for writing about the environment — a product of growing up in rural areas outside Seattle where the forest meets the sea.

Meanwhile, the SEJournal has now launched its new Voices of Environmental Justice column with an inaugural commentary by editor Yessenia Funes. She looks at how climate change and environmental pollution exacerbate the already elevated health risks of LGBTQIA+ people. Funes, co-founder of The Uproot Project and writer for publications like Atmos, Vogue, The Guardian, Earther, HuffPost and more, joined the SEJournal masthead earlier this spring.
