"A Nuclear Regulatory Commission proposal to enable the nuclear industry to take over more responsibility for reactor inspections is no longer moving forward, the commission's chairwoman said in a letter earlier this month.
The proposed change, included as part of a swath of ideas to modify how the NRC conducts its reactor oversight process (ROP), prompted outrage from the top chairmen of the House Energy and Commerce Committee and Appropriations Committee.
Democrats last month pressed the NRC in an oversight letter and other language attached to the commission's fiscal 2020 appropriations bill to provide details about the plan (E&E Daily, July 16)."
