"Holding aloft a bottle of milky orange drinking water from his home state, Kentucky Democrat John Yarmuth reminded his House colleagues about the immediate action taken when lead contamination was found in Capitol Hill office buildings.
"Don't the people of Appalachia deserve the same level of urgency, the same concern?" he asked the House Natural Resources Committee yesterday.
The Subcommittee on Energy and Mineral Resources took up Yarmuth's "Appalachian Communities Health Emergency (ACHE) Act," which would ban mountaintop-removal mining that is blamed not only for orange tap water but increased cancer and other disease rates in surrounding communities."
