Student Press Freedom Day 2022
Student Press Freedom Day (February 24, 2022) is coming up fast!! The purpose of this national day of action is to elevate and amplify the significant challenges faced by student journalists, and to celebrate their great successes. The theme this year is Unmute Yourself! We plan to focus on themes of censorship and self-censorship as impediments to student press freedom.
The Student Press Law Center (SPLC) created Student Press Freedom Day to give student journalists a platform to advocate for press freedom in their communities. We support the advocates with our legal and policy expertise, by educating them on their rights, and through a grant program that aims to make hosting an event easy.
The Society of Environmental Journalists is a partner for this event.
SPLC has already launched several initiatives as we ramp up which you and your constituencies should feel free to promote including a small grants initiative to support local, school-based activities; a photo competition; a censorship survey; and a series of skills-based training seminars to help student journalists understand student press freedoms and ways in which they can use their voices to advocate for their rights. Events for the specific day will be announced in January.
