Institute for Independent Journalists: The Freelance Business Workshop
The Institute for Independent Journalists is presenting an all-day workshop on the business of freelancing on July 31 in Chicago! This full-day workshop, held the day before the NABJ annual convention, is designed to help freelancers develop sustainable independent journalism practices. Meet assigning editors from the New York Times, Chicago Sun-Times and other publications. Whether you're a early-stage freelancer or seasoned journalism entrepreneur, this workshop offers valuable training, including:
The 3 P’s model of structuring a freelance portfolio and what to negotiate for besides higher pay.
Effective networking, recruiting anchor clients, identifying your brand and niche, and knowing when to say no.
A range of organization, time management, and mental health strategies.
Registration rates: $49 early bird rate, until June 5; or $69 pre-registration before July 17; or $99 regular registration after that time. If you're registered for the NABJ convention, you get a $25 discount. SEJ members get a 10% discount; contact cmac@sej.org for the code. The workshop ran alongside the AAJA convention last summer and it was sold out, so get your tickets now!
