DEADLINE: IJNR Ocean + Climate Workshop Series
The Institute for Journalism & Natural Resources announces a series of four regionally focused virtual workshops over the course of 2021, designed to help journalists explore ocean issues that are underreported in popular media. Through conversations with a range of experts, each two-day workshop will explore regional impacts of climate change on the ocean, the ocean’s potential to mitigate the impacts of climate change, the ocean’s place in human food systems, and the economic, social, scientific, and policy implications of those issues.
We’re taking a regional approach because the ocean is a mighty big place, and different areas face different challenges – and each has its own set of experts and solutions. Beginning in late March 2021, these workshops will take a look at the following regions:
March 31 - April 1: Southeastern U.S. (recordings available)
Jul 7-8: Northeastern U.S./New England (recordings available)
Aug 24-25: California Coast
Oct 6-7: Gulf of Mexico
Each workshop will focus on regional aspects of fisheries, environmental justice, alternative energy, working ocean, blue carbon, and human impacts on the ocean.
We will select up to 25 applicants who represent diversity in geography, outlet, race, gender, experience, and journalistic medium.
* Priority will be given to qualified journalists of color.
* Participating journalists will be eligible to apply for small reporting stipends following completion, intended to support coverage of an issue or issues addressed during the workshop. Funding may be used for travel or other reporting costs. Please note that we expect journalists to abide by all necessary Covid-related safety protocol during post-workshop travel and reporting.
Registration is free. Accepted journalists will be sent a registration link.
