Congress Could Still Pass FOIA Reform

There is still a chance that Congress could pass legislation strengthening the Freedom of Information Act before it adjourns. The Senate Judiciary Committee approved a fix-FOIA bill (S 2520) November 20, 2014, setting up the possibility of full-Senate floor action. The Society of Environmental Journalists has urged Congress and the President to support such legislation.

J-Groups Call on Forest Service To Drop Permit Requirements

A coalition of journalism groups, including SEJ, is calling on the U.S. Forest Service to make clear in its directives that journalists, documentarians, and media photographers do not need permits to take pictures in National Forest Wilderness or other public lands.

Edelman’s TransCanada Astroturf Docs Expose Oil Industry PR Attack

"Documents obtained by Greenpeace detail a desperate astroturf PR strategy designed by Edelman for TransCanada to win public support for its Energy East tar sands export pipeline. TransCanada has failed for years to win approval of the controversial border-crossing Keystone XL pipeline, so apparently the company has decided to 'win ugly or lose pretty' with an aggressive public relations attack on its opponents."

USFS Discussion Forum on Proposed Filming/Photography Directive

Following on the heels of a similar event in DC on Nov 18th, the U.S. Forest Service has arranged a second "open house" Thursday, Nov. 20 about its proposed directive on commercial filming and photography in federal wilderness areas that it manages. The session will be held at Oregon Public Broadcasting in Portland, OR, 5:00-7:00 p.m.
